Antique gingerbread mold A

A C19th Dutch carved gingerbread mold or more technically a 'speculaasplank'! These wooden planks were relief carved with different decorations and used to make spiced biscuits for St Nicholas' Eve on December 5th in Flanders. This example shows a young suitor in traditional dress and the biscuit made from this would be given to the object of a man's affections - if she accepted the biscuit, she reciprocated his feelings! As pieces of folk art they're now rather collectable and they make wonderful kitchen decoration - especially considering the scale of this example which is in excellent condition.
